Sony’s Income Increased 25% in Quarter

Sony's games division finally turned a profit last quarter. Sony sold 4.9 million PS3s last quarter after slashing console prices, boosting game titles, and cutting production costs internally. Of course, we're sure Wii shortages aren't hurting Sony's bottom line either. Sony did lower its annual sales goal of PS3s from 11 million to 9.5 million (citing a slow start) while increasing PSP projections to 13 million from 10 million as originally expected. Sony's fiscal year ends in March. Overall, Sony's profits rose 25% for the quarter. Welcome back to black Sony, it's been a long time coming.

Sony also enjoyed robust holiday demand for its Cyber-shot digital cameras, Handycam camcorders and Vaio PCs, while cutting production costs of its loss-making PlayStation 3 game console and broadening its game software lineup.

Its game business swung to a profit after Sony cut production costs and retail prices of the PlayStation 3 game console and broadened its game software lineup in a bid to catch up with Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

Sigma's SD14 DSLR

Sigma has announced the imminent availability of the greatly anticipated DP1 digital camera. The DP1 has a sensor around the size of those found in most DLSRs - although it is greatly different in terms of design - and aims to offer equivalent image-quality and specification in a compact format. In common with Sigma's DSLR offerings it utilizes Foveon's direct-image-sensor technology which detects three colors at each of its 4.6 million pixels (collecting the same amount of color data as a conventional 14 megapixel sensor). Our contacts at Sigma say it will be available in "spring."

The 14 megapixel FOVEON X3 sensor found in Sigma's SD14 DSLR can do in a compact's body. That's about 7 to 12 times larger than the sensor found in ordinary compacts. The biggest compromise you'll be making though, is with the lens. A fixed, 16.6-mm F4 lens designed exclusively for the DP1 illuminates each 7.8μm pixel on that 20.7 x 13.8-mm sensor. If you're still game then rounding things out are Sigma's new "TRUE" image processing engine, a 2.5-inch LCD, pop-up manual flash, hot shoe, manual or 9-point autofocus modes, and QVGA movie recording to SDHC cards. All this in a 4.5 x 2.3 x 2-inch body weighing 8.5-ounces.

Powered XPS M1330 Notebooks - Dell Ubuntu

Dell will be selling its Ubuntu-powered XPS M1330 notebooks for less than the $1,000 mark, targeting those who prefer to work with a penguin instead of in an environment filled with shards from broken windows. This new offering featuring Ubuntu 7.10 pre-installed will be available in Germany, UK, France, Spain and the US, with the option for users to include Corel LinDVD with each purchase by forking out additional dough (but of course). Word has it that Dell has also started to sell a fair bit of their Linux systems with proprietary NIVIDA graphics drivers installed and 3D effects enabled for superior portable performance.

Apple MacBook Air - slimmest notebook

Apple announced the slimmest notebook around, the MacBook Air. It only measures .16-inches and is slim enough to slip into a manila envelope. MacBook Air features a full-size keyboard and LED-backlit 13.3-inch display with built-in iSight. It also sports a new larger trackpad that supports multi-touch gestures. Similar to the interface of the iPhone where you can pinch in or pan out, the MacBook Air’s trackpad allows you to do the same, it even allows you to rotate images with two fingers, and move windows with a flick. Apple was able to contain the size by using the same 1.8-inch 80GB drive that's in the iPod classic. However the64GB SSD is optional. So far so good, but on the flipside just like an iPod, you can't just crack it open to replace the hard drive, memory or even battery. On full charge the batter will last you five hours. Also the thing doesn’t sport an Ethernet port either.

Apple MacBook Air steers clear of optical media, but there's a separate external you can snap up for $99. The laptop also features something called the Remote Disk that'll let the Air get data off the optical drive in any PC or Mac running the Remote Disk software. Pricing starts at $1799 and the Air will be shipping in two weeks.

Alienware Area-51 m15x

Announcing with quite a splash, Alienware's new Area-51 m15x and m17x laptops a couple of months back. Two of the m15x models are available to order immediately, with the third promised soon. Unfortunately for those looking for a bargain, the two available now are the higher end models, coming in at $2,099 and $2,699, with the "low-end" $1,499 model only listed as "coming soon." Of course, you can't expect everything to be let loose at once, and Alienware still seems to be dragging things out with the 17-inch model, although we wouldn't expect it to be too much longer before it makes itself known.
