Ferrari FXX Evoluzione

The latest FXX Evoluzione from Ferrari. The Italian auto brand has unveiled its stunning FXX Evoluzione, which is basically the "further evolution of the FXX program that places 'client test drivers' behind the wheel of developmental test beds to try out new equipment for Ferrari." Schumacher himself has unveiedl the car, having sporadically participated in the program over the past two years. Taking its first steps at Ferrari World Finals at Italy's Mugello racetrack, a V12 engine raised its output to 860 HP and 9,500 rpm. Plus the shift times are down to a lightning-fast 60 milliseconds. A real beast in disguise!

All in all it means that the FXX Evoluzione can now lap the company's private Fiorano test track two seconds faster than its predecessor at 1 min 16 sec. The kit can be retrofitted to any of the 20 FXXs that took place in the program until now, and includes participation in a renewed program that will take these most extreme machines to two events each in North America, Europe and Asia each year over the next two years. Autoblog has rightly put “Money may not be able to buy youhappiness, but it can buy you a seat as a Ferrari test driver”...More

Graphical Passwords

Newcastle University researchers are developing Graphical Password using pictures that will also be easier for people with language difficulties such as dyslexia. Hard to remember passwords that will be use as a artwork such combinations of alphanumeric characters is not a problem anymore. The technology is similar to fingerprinting or retina scanning. Graphical passwords are far harder, or even impossible, for machines to hack using brute-force attacks. The more complex your drawing of an object is, the more secure your device is. The system is called Background Draw a Secret, and it could hit smartphones fairly soon with add-on software.

The computer remembers the number of "pen" strokes used, where the image was started and the order in which they were made. Dr Jeff Yan, a computer science lecturer, and PhD student Paul Dunphy have developed emerging Draw a Secret (DAS) technology and applied it to a background image. The improved software is known as BDAS - Background Draw a Secret, which makes it easier for the user to remember where to start drawing on the screen. Dr Yan said: "Many people find it difficult to remember a password so choose words that are easy to remember and therefore more susceptible to hackers. Most of us have forgotten a pin number or a password at least once, that main reason was, it is intended to make them so easy to guess. However, the human mind has a much greater capacity for remembering images, and it's certainly true that a picture is worth a thousand words in this instance." Technorati Profile

Beating the iPhone with Top 5 Reasons Series 60 Touch Interface

Here comes the first credible threat to the iPhone, the world's largest mobile phone maker Nokia has expanded the ever popular Series 60 Touch User Interface to include touch user interface and sensor technologies. Here are 5 reasons we feel the updated Series 60 will beat the iPhone.

No 5 - The S60 smartphone software offers licensees the opportunity to develop devices with a variety of input methods, whether it is a touch screen with a traditional keypad, touch screen with a qwerty keyboard or touch screen alone, supporting both finger or stylus optimized input, in addition to the range of access options that already exist today. The iPhone is limited to finger input only.

No 4 - S60 Touch interface supports Tactile feedback which is more like force feedback. So when the user taps or touches the screen there is a physical pulse and feedback, this will be great for gaming. The iPhone lacks this feature.

No 3 - S60 Touch will be the first mobile software platform to offer Web Browser integrated with Flash Video which allows people to view on the go Flash-enabled Web sites. The iPhone has support for YouTube via a separate application but the inbuilt Safari browser lacks Flash support.

No 2 - The S60 interface is licensed to multiple companies (Samsung, Panasonic and Siemens) and is not only limited to Nokia. This gives the user a wider choice of handsets.

No 1 - Series 60 is the most widely used smartphone OS with 100 million S60 devices cumulatively shipped by April 2007. Nokia developer forum has thousands of registered developers and hundreds of companies making applications for the S60 interface. Development kit for the S60 Touch will ship with UI Accelerator toolkit to allow device manufacturers to develop rapidly and easily impressive graphical effects and new types of interactions with the light, proximity and distance sensors. Currently there are tons of applications and games available for the S60 interface. The iPhone on the other hand has no SDK kit and only a couple of applications.

The Wii reverse-engineering hat trick is now complete. The Vii clone just spat out a whole host of new games ready to slake your need for Happy Tennis and Alacrity Golf. Or maybe Fry Egg is more your style. No worries, plenty of options to choose from -- soon, in fact, judging by the pace of these leaks. Too bad your choice of Miis appears limited to a fluffy bunny or albino rat at this point...More on engadget

Flashy flash

Swissmemory Prestige is a collection of 1GB flash drives that fold into housings made of 925-sterling silver or 18-karat white and yellow gold. If that's not enough bling for you, there's always the option of including diamonds on the casings. Go nuts with the Pave model, which features diamonds on top of yellow and white gold, and you'll be set back a cool $23,000. A nice touch: The flash drive can be removed for easy upgrading, so you'll still have a use for the Swissmemory Prestige a few years down the road. Just don't leave it plugged into a computer at some Internet cafe, okay?...(source: tech.msn.com)

The Swiss company Pat Says Now manufactures computer mice that come in a different of fun designs such as cats, ducks, and even a green brain (which the company describes as "outrageously bilious"). At around $25,000, it's the world's most expensive computer mouse, the company claims. One look, and you'll see why: Its case is 18-karat white gold encrusted with 59 brilliant-cut diamonds in the shape of--you guessed it--a flower...(source: tech.msn.com)

The Best Powered USB Hub

This is the most fashionable and the best powered USB hub we've ever seen. The Medusa Hub supports 4 USB 2.0 ports up to 480Mbps, 2 Firewire 400 ports up to 400 Mbps and comes with a USB fan and USB light attached. Works in most Windows, Mac, and Linux OS and available now from ThinkGeek.

Medusa was a mythical creature, a Gorgon woman with snakes for hair that was so ugly she's turn anyone who looked at her into stone. While we don't think anyone will turn to stone gazing upon this stylish and functional USB gadget, we do think it would look awesome if each tentacle had a Master Chief USB drive plugged in, dangling in mid-air with their little USB heads missing...More

US 3G Costs Nokia N95 a Mere Hour of Battery Life

When you go from the old Nokia N95 to the new US-spec 3G HSDPA version, you lose about an hour of browsing life. That's due to the larger battery, and the folks at WirelessInfo.com were actually expecting even more of a drain, so this is good news. More:

The N95-3 has a 1200mAh battery, which is significantly bigger than the 950mAh battery in the older, non-3G N95. So the 3G battery is definitely affecting the battery life, but the bigger battery is doing a lot to compensate for that.

While the 3G drain is much stronger than EDGE, this implies that there might be even better EDGE performance than on the original. WirelessInfo.com says they may check into this for us.

The bottom line is this:

The new version of the N95 was able to keep browsing over a 3G network for 6 hours 12 minutes. Under exactly the same conditions, the old N95 (using an EDGE connection) was able to keep on browsin' for 7 hours 15 minutes...Read More

Blu-Ray

Blu-ray Disc (also called BD) is a high-density optical disc format for the storage of digital information, including high-definition video.

The name Blu-ray Disc is based from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm),significantly more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red (650 nm) laser. A single layer Blu-ray Disc can store 25 GB, over 5 times the size of a single layer DVD at 4.7 GB. A dual layer Blu-ray Disc can store 50 GB, almost 6 times the size of a dual layer DVD at 8.5 GB.Blu-ray Disc is currently in a formal war with rival format HD DVD.

Recording 18 hours of 1080p on a single disc is pretty serious stuff, and Panasonic Blu-ray recorders launched at CEATEC Japan do this. They do this via a digital TV tuner, and MPEG 4 compression, and support for 50GB dual layer discs you'd see on a PC recorder, but never before on a home theater box. The players also have HDDs in them, up to $2600 for a 1TB model (There are 5 other lesser models, too, and the phrase product spam (comes to mind). The terrabyte drive can do 381 hours of recording, but using that lowest setting for 1080p seems perverse and wrong. Transferring from HDD to disc can be done at 4x. Japan only, for now, and given the high-endness of this setup and American HDMI DRM, maybe forever. [PC World]
